Une étude expérimentale des formats de présentation de la performance : tableaux versus graphiques

Abstract

Les utilisateurs sont-ils influencés par le format de présentation de la performance ? Leur compréhension de la performance est-elle meilleure lorsque celle-ci est présentée sous forme de graphiques ou de tableaux ? Quelle est leur perception des graphiques et des tableaux ? Cette recherche se propose de répondre à ces questions à l'aide d'une étude expérimentale menée auprès de 276 sujets. Les résultats révèlent que la compréhension des sujets est influencée par le format de présentation mais également par la complexité de la tâche et l'indicateur de performance divulgué. De plus, il existe des effets combinés entre le format et la complexité de la tâche. Les tableaux permettent une meilleure compréhension des sujets alors que les graphiques sont plus rapides à lire tout en étant moins précis. Globalement, plus la complexité de la tâche augmente et moins les graphiques sont performants. Concernant l'influence de l'indicateur de performance, le dividende par action accroît à la fois la qualité et le temps de réponse en comparaison au résultat par action et cela quel que soit le format de présentation. L'étude de la perception des sujets révèle par ailleurs que les tableaux sont systématiquement mieux perçus que les graphiques au regard de la pertinence et de l'exactitude de l'information diffusée et de la rapidité et facilité de lecture.
