Author

Abstract

Hicks once wrote that there were two Hicks, an uncle, J.R., and a nephew, John. The non-neoclassical nephew is quite disrespectful towards his neoclassical uncle’s work. This paper offers an intellectual biography of Hicks from the beginning of his career until the publication, in 1939, of Value and capital, probably his most famous and influential work. We examine this evolution in the light of John’s later comments on J.R.’s works. Hicks’s metamorphoses are complex and entangled, with the nephew sometimes taking up ideas advanced by the uncle at the beginning of his career. Drawing on Hick’s relations with Hayek, Myrdal and Keynes, the paper is a contribution to the analyses of the inter-war theoretical debates.
