Abstract

Despite the imposition of various environmental regulations in Quebec, the impact of agriculture on water quality remains a concern particularly in the Chaudière-Appalaches. This area is intensive in animal and crop productions leading to excess phosphorus, nitrogen and sediment runoff. This study aims to analyze the technical efficiency and environmental efficiency for agricultural producers in the basin of the Chaudière River located at the south of Quebec City. We adopt a parametric approach applied to stochastic distance functions. The data cover 210 farms and our results show that there is a strong correlation between the two efficiencies. Moreover, as shown in other studies, environmental performance leads to additional costs at the farm.
