Evidencia empírica sobre la teoría de la demanda de educación superior en América Latina: un estudio sobre el caso del Caribe Colombiano

Abstract

Esta comunicación presenta un análisis de la teoría de la elección micro-económica tomando como referencia de la demanda de educación de tercer ciclo de los graduantes de secundaria en el Caribe colombiano. Se pretende, establecer el nivel de incidencia de factores como nivel educativo del padre y de la madre, condiciones socio económicas, resultados de las pruebas de rendimiento y trascender el análisis de otras variables no tan estudiadas desde la perspectiva de la teoría del consumidor. La pertinencia de esta investigación reside en que se trabaja con un censo de 69.738 observaciones de los estudiantes que se encuentran en proceso de su graduación de secundaria, cuando generalmente los estudios realizados en el país se han basado en estudios muestrales. Esto permite tener un amplio espectro de análisis. Los datos provienen de la encuesta realizada por el Instituto Colombiano para la Evaluación de la Educación ICFES en el periodo 2010. La metodología consiste en la estimación de un modelo logit multinomial con cuatro categorías base que discriminan la demanda entre formación técnica, tecnológica y nivel profesional. Desde el punto de vista de la microeconomía de la educación, la comunicación presenta una confrontación de la evidencia empírica de las propuestas de Mark Blaug, quien propone un modelo de demanda educativa en la que prevalecen los motivos consumo frente a lo propuestos por Gary Becker y Jacob Mincer, que proponen en la teoría del capital humano la educación como un bien de inversión, donde los estudiantes demandan educación en función de los retornos que se esperan obtener a lo largo de su vida.
