Incidencia del género del profesorado en el rendimiento en matemáticas de los alumnos. Evidencia desde Cataluña

Abstract

En este artículo investigamos si el género del profesorado incide sobre el rendimiento académico de los alumnos, un ámbito de análisis en el que la evidencia empírica existente no resulta concluyente. En concreto, se consideran dos efectos: por un lado, si el género del profesorado tiene algún efecto sobre los resultados de una prueba estandarizada de matemáticas (denominada “Cangur”) que realizan estudiantes de secundaria de diversos centros en Cataluña; por otro lado, si dicho género aumenta o no la probabilidad de que los alumnos se presenten a la misma. La muestra se centra en alumnos de tercero y cuarto de ESO, así como de Bachillerato (los cursos para los que se realiza la prueba). En el estudio se consideran variables relacionadas con los alumnos, el profesorado y el centro, así como efectos fijos escolares. Los resultados muestran que, respecto al rendimiento matemático, tanto los alumnos como las alumnas se benefician de tener una profesora en lugar de un profesor. Asimismo, existe una mayor probabilidad de que el alumnado se presente a las pruebas “Cangur” si aprenden matemáticas con una profesora pero, en este caso, el efecto es mayor para los chicos.
