Abstract

This paper proposes a reflection to induce a better understanding of R&D in services, based on case studies carried out in Brazilian University Hospitals (UHs). The results show that the generation and increase of the stock of knowledge in services go beyond those reported in the material component. We also found that a diversity of actors contributed in an informal way to these dynamics. Concerning R&D funding, we noticed that service R&D is not always planned through a formal project. Then we suggested expanded R&D indicators which seems to contribute to the improvement of statistics related to R&D in services.
