Can neighbourhoods change the decisions of youth on the margins of university participation?

Abstract

This paper uses the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) to estimate the relationship between neighbourhoods and university participation among Canadian youth. Neighbourhood quality is proxied by the fraction of neighbourhood adults with a Bachelor's degree. The estimated effect is identified using neighbourhood variation within high schools. The paper also tests whether the effects differ by family background and children’s reading skills. Neighbourhoods do not affect university participation among youth drawn from the tails of the socio‐economic distribution. Neighbourhoods have the largest effect on youth drawn from the middle of the socio‐economic distribution who also have above median reading skills. Ce mémoire utilise les données de l’Enquête auprès de jeunes en transition pour estimer la relation entre les voisinages et la participation à l’éducation universitaire des jeunes canadiens. La qualité du voisinage est approximée par le pourcentage des adultes du voisinage qui ont un grade de premier cycle. L’effet estimé est mesuré en tenant compte de la variation de voisinage dans les écoles secondaires. Le mémoire teste si les effets sont différents quand on tient compte du cadre familial et des habiletés de lecture des enfants. L’effet de voisinage n’affecte pas la participation universitaire des jeunes qui sont dans les extrémités de la distribution du statut socio‐économique. Les voisinages ont leur impact le plus important sur les jeunes qui sont dans la zone centrale de la distribution des statuts socio‐économiques et qui ont des habiletés de lecture au dessus de la médiane.
