Presidential Address: Mathematics in economics and econometrics

Abstract

The paper discusses the choices of mathematical approaches in economics and econometrics, in particular, approaches that either (a) aim for a sharp result or (b) use the least restrictive assumptions. It is argued that, while the choice (a) often necessitates strong mathematical assumptions, choice (b) may lead to only partial identification and may require using less familiar mathematical techniques. This is discussed in the context of the problem of defining a probability density: existence may fail in function spaces; even after imposing assumptions that ensure existence, the problem is not well posed. A density function may not exist for economic variables as a consequence of institutional rigidity such as an income supplement. The apparatus of generalized functions provides the general solution to identification and well‐posedness of density, but at the cost of less sharp results and greater mathematical complexity. Ce mémoire discute des choix des approches mathématiques en économie et en économétrie, en particulier les approches qui (a) soit visent à obtenir des résultats bien taillés, ou (b) soit cherchent à travailler avec les postulats les moins restrictifs. On suggère que le choix (a) nécessite souvent des contraintes mathématiques fortes, alors que le choix (b) peut parvenir seulement à des identifications partielles et réclamer qu’on utilise des techniques mathématiques moins conventionnelles. On discute de ces problèmes dans le contexte du problème de définition d’une densité de probabilité : son existence peut ne pas se matérialiser dans des espaces fonctionnels; même après l’imposition de postulats qui en assure l’existence, le problème n’est pas bien posé. Une fonction de densité peut ne pas exister pour des variables économiques en raison de rigidités institutionnelles telle que le supplément de revenu. L’appareil de fonctions généralisées fournit une solution générale à l’identification et au caractère bien posé de la densité, mais au coût de résultats moins bien taillés et d’une complexité mathématique plus grande.
