Zu den Beschlüssen über die Europäische Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion

Abstract

Mit dem Start der Währungsunion am 1. Jänner 1999 sollten Rahmenbedingungen geschaffen sein, die langfristig eine Steigerung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der europäischen Wirtschaft ermöglichen. Seitens der Wirtschaftswissenschaft wurden zahlreiche Einwände gegen das Funktionieren vorgebracht, die meist auf der Theorie des optimalen Währungsgebietes beruhen. Allerdings werden weitere Fortschritte in der wirtschaftlichen Konvergenz der Mitgliedsländer erst ein Ergebnis der Währungsunion sein. Für Österreichs Wirtschaft ist die Teilnahme an der WWU ein notwendiger und aus der bisherigen Orientierung der Wirtschaftspolitik folgender Schritt, der allerdings Wirtschaft und Wirtschaftspolitik vor neue Herausforderungen stellt.
