Trends in local and small area mortality and morbidity in Yorkshire and the Humber: Monitoring health inequalities

Abstract

The paper investigates mortality and morbidity in the 1990s in Yorkshire and the Humber. Mortality for districts and wards is computed and the inequality between areas estimated. The results show that although mortality decreased between 1990-92 and 1996-98, only a few districts and wards improved relative to England and Wales. Inequalities between wards sorted by deprivation quintiles increased over the period. By contrast, self-reported morbidity increased between 1991 and 2001, but inequalities decreased. The paper discusses interpretations of these trends and the spatial patterns for men and women and for children, adults and the retired. Rees P. et Brown D. Mediante un computo de la mortalidad para los distritos y municipios valoramos la desigualdad entre las diferentes areas. Los resultados indican que, si bien la mortalidad disminuyo entre 1990-92 y 1996-98, solo unos cuantos municipios y regiones mostraron una mejora en comparacion con Inglaterra y Gales. Las desigualdades entre municipios y distritos clasificados en funcion de las carencias aumentaron durante este periodo. Al mismo tiempo, los casos de morbilidad informados por los mismos enfermos aumentaron entre 1991 y 2001, pero las desigualdades disminuyeron.
