Currency iconography and entrepreneurship

Abstract

Currency iconography is the study of images on currency banknotes. This article discusses how certain kinds of images on a country’s currency are correlated with entrepreneurial activity. A simple OLS model is used to examine the relationship between a currency iconography index for all countries in 2015 developed by Lawson (2019) and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) data for 2015. This article finds that countries with religious currency iconography tend to have less entrepreneurial activity, and countries with currency depicting objects and individuals related to science, technology, and business have greater levels of entrepreneurial activity. As nations discuss updating the images on their currency, it is important to understand how these images can reflect the values in a society.
