Non-family members and conflict processes in family firms: a systematic review of literature

Abstract

The goal of this paper is to examine the role of non-family members in conflict processes in family firms. Through a systematic review of literature, we synthesise the findings of 57 studies, categorise the antecedents (inputs), outcomes (outputs), conflict resolution approaches, and organise the research gaps and research questions. Non-family members do play a role in a broad range of conflicts, which we categorise into three groups based on the conflicting parties: conflict between family and non-family members, conflict between family members, and conflict between non-family members. The findings are discussed along with the following conflict types: uncategorised (dysfunctional) conflict, affective and cognitive conflict, and interest-based conflict. Further, we distinguish three levels of analysis of the input and output variables: individual-, family- and firm-level. The presence of non-family members may contribute to the emergence of conflicts in family firms, but they can also reduce conflicts among family members.
