Abstract

[eng] Fewer and fewer large families - The number of large families decreased by half between the 1968 and 1982 censuses, while the proportion of large foreign families increased significantly. The fathers are primarily farmers and workers and, above all, foreigners. Unemployment is relatively frequent among the latter. The mothers rarely work. . The great majority of large foreign families are tenants in low-income public housing (HLM). On the other hand, more than half of large French families are home owners. Overcrowding remains, however, the lot of nearly one large family in two. . The income of these families decreases with its size. The government policy compensates for this decrease, but is essentially aimed at favoring the birth of the third child. The standard of living clearly decreases with the number of children.
