Abstract

[eng] The impact of short term credit constraints on farms’ profitability. Anonparametric approach.. The impact of credit constraints on the economic performance of farms is evaluated. Following Färe, Grosskopf and Lee (1990), we estimate a nonparametric frontier function maximising profit with and without credit constraints. Taking a sample of farms from the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France over the period 1995-1998, we obtain estimates for the loss of profit due to limited access to the credit system. Our results show that while variations in economic performance between farms depend mainly on input mismanagement, credit constraints undeniably affect agricultural profits. [fre] L’objet de ce papier est d’analyser l’impact de la contrainte de financement sur la performance économique des exploitations agricoles. A l’instar de Färe, Grosskopf et Lee (1990), nous construisons une frontière de profit dans une approche non paramétrique et maximisons le profit avec et sans contrainte de trésorerie. Sur un échantillon d’exploitations agricoles de la région Nord-Pas-de-Calais de 1995 à 1998, nous évaluons la perte de profit causée par un financement limité. Notre application montre que si la performance économique des exploitations dépend en premier lieu de la gestion des facteurs de production, la contrainte de financement exerce toutefois un effet significatif sur le niveau de profitabilité.
