Parents’ sensemaking processes in the identification of developmental delays and engagement with early intervention services

Abstract

•Heuristic processes influenced the Common Sense Model when identifying a delay.•Self-efficacy may facilitate transitions between stimuli and representations.•Uncertainty about prognosis led to hope and infused cognitive representation.•Physicians should reconsider wait-and-see approach to referral for EI evaluation.•Therapy should be described as support for parents' interactions with toddler.
