Comparing tools to predict REDD+ conservation costs to Amazon smallholders

Abstract

•Two contingent valuation framings applied to obtain WTA for conservation contracts.•Auction framing resulted in lower mean WTA and sample variance than standard.•Auction framing more meaningfully correlated with socio-demographic drivers.•WTA positively correlated to measures of foregone rent from halting deforestation.•Promising potential of WTA methods for designing future conservation strategies.
