Abstract

•We estimate China domestic air passenger market's CO2 emissions in 2007 and 2014.•We assess the change of air route networks and emission features focused on regional disparity.•Applying decomposition method to identify the driving forces of estimated CO2 emissions.•Noteworthy offset to increasing CO2 emissions is indicated from modal split changes.
