Abstract

•Rickshaws served 7.6 million trips/day (2009), close to double of the highest passenger carried by London Tube (2012)•Rickshaws suit most well to Dhaka's transport, land-use and demographic characteristics•Yet locally and globally supported rickshaw ban attempts are increasing•Pro-auto coalition includes institutions, individuals, experts, donors, government and private enterprises.•Anti-ricksahw politics can be explained by elite-middle class mindset of local stakeholders and associated politics of informality and presence of weak and military government(s). facilitati.
