Technique to harmonize Booking.com's dual rating systems

Abstract

•Booking.com changed its rating system gradually from Sept 2019 through April 2020.•This can lead to misleading results regarding the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.•We studied the level of data contamination by analysing over half a million reviews.•A generalized cleaning and estimation procedure is developed and demonstrated.•Enables study of the pandemic as well as impact of changes to rating systems
