A Micro-Businesses Perspective on Factors Affecting the Adoption of Mobile Payment Services During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Mauritius

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic which first appeared in December 2019 had a huge impact on people’s lives. SMEs had to alter their routines as well as find a new way of doing business. For instance, in the last two years, the adoption intention of Mobile payment has increased to avoid getting infected by the virus. However, even though there is a strong demand for it globally, in developing countries, there is still a comparatively low usage rate. This study aims at analyzing the factors affecting the adoption intention of Mobile payment services by Micro-businesses in Mauritius. To achieve an understanding of the factors affecting the adoption intention of mobile payment, variables such as Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Personal Innovativeness and Perceived Security have been explored. For this study, micro-businesses from the retail industry in Mauritius were surveyed. Therefore, this quantitative survey consists of 200 respondents and the data collected were used to analyze the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable which is adoption intention. The results revealed that all four variables have a positive relationship with intention to adopt mobile payment. Lastly, the study also provides some recommendations as well as some proposals for further research in this field.
