Abstract

Theimpactofcreditconstraintsontheeconomicperformanceoffarmsisevaluated.FollowingFäre,GrosskopfandLee (1990), we estimate anonparametricfrontier function maximising profit with and without creditconstraints. Taking a sampleof farms from theNord-Pas-de-Calais region of Franceover theperiod 1995-1998, weobtainestimates for the lossofprofitduetolimitedaccesstothecreditsystem.Ourresultsshowthatwhilevariationsineconomicperformance between farms depend mainly on input mismanagement, credit constraints undeniably affect agricultural profits.
