Impact of transport infrastructure on local development in Dalmatia

Abstract

This paper aims to determine the impact of transport infrastructure on local development in Dalmatia. To examine the direct, indirect and feedback effects, a spatial Durbin model was used on a sample of 131 local administrative units in a period from 2010 to 2018. Since transport infrastructure varies very little over the 9 years, the spatial‐fixed effect model was not appropriate. In fact, the financial crisis paved the way for the time‐fixed effect model. The impacts were determined by estimating the direct, indirect and overall effects for the road network as a whole, as well as for each individual road category. Besides, the analysis was done for the coastline, hinterland, and islands to estimate the effects for spatially heterogeneous areas. The results vary, in terms of strength and statistical significance, with spatial heterogeneity, but also with different road classifications. In hinterland, direct and total impacts are positive, on the other hand direct, indirect and total effects on the coastline are not statistically significant. This shows us the complexity of the research area and indicates the prudence of researching at the lowest possible level and with indicators of road infrastructure as analytical as possible. Este artículo tiene por objeto determinar el impacto de la infraestructura de transporte en el desarrollo local de Dalmacia. Para examinar los efectos directos, indirectos y de retroalimentación, se utilizó un modelo espacial de Durbin con una muestra de 131 unidades administrativas locales en el período entre 2010 y 2018. Dado que la infraestructura de transporte varió muy poco a lo largo de los 9 años de estudio, el modelo de efectos espaciales fijos no se consideró apropiado. De hecho, la crisis financiera allanó el camino para el uso de un modelo de efectos temporales fijos. Los impactos se determinaron estimando los efectos directos, indirectos y generales para la red de carreteras en su conjunto, así como para cada categoría individual de carreteras. Además, el análisis se hizo para la costa, el interior y las islas, con el fin de estimar los efectos para áreas espacialmente heterogéneas. Los resultados variaron, en términos de robustez y significación estadística, en función de la heterogeneidad espacial, pero también con las diferentes clasificaciones de las carreteras. Si bien en el interior los impactos directos y totales fueron positivos, en la costa los efectos directos, indirectos y totales no fueron estadísticamente significativos. Esto nos muestra la complejidad de esta área de investigación e indica la prudencia de investigar al nivel más bajo posible y con indicadores de infraestructura vial tan analíticos como sea posible. 本稿では、ダルマチアの地域開発に対する交通輸送インフラの影響を検討する。2010~2018年の期間での131の地方行政単位のサンプルを用いて、空間ダービンモデルにより、直接効果、間接効果、フィードバック効果を調べた。交通輸送インフラは9年間では、ほとんど変化がないため、空間的な固定効果モデルは適切ではなかった。実に、金融危機は時間固定効果モデルへの道を開いた。道路網全体および各分類の道路に対する直接効果、間接効果および全体的な効果を推定して、影響を解明した。さらに、海岸部、後背地、離島の分析を行い、空間的に不均質な地域に対する影響を推定した。結果は、空間的不均一性と道路の種類によって、強度と統計的有意性が異なっていた。後背地では、直接的および全体的な影響はプラスであるが、海岸部では直接的、間接的および総合的な影響は統計的に有意ではなかった。これは、この研究分野の複雑さと、可能な限り低いレベルで、また可能な限り分析的な道路インフラの指標を用いて研究することの慎重さを示している。
