Regional development trap in Turkey: Can relatedness find a way out?

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between related and unrelated variety and regional development traps in 26 NUTS 2 regions across Turkey from 2014 to 2021. We propose two unique measures, DT1 and DT2, for these traps based on deviations from EU and emerging market nations. Our findings suggest a notable negative correlation between related variety and DT1, implying that increasing related variety could potentially mitigate the risk of falling into development traps. Furthermore, DT1 appeared to be more reliable than DT2 in accurately representing the risk of regional development traps, particularly in countries experiencing high growth deviations, like Turkey. Este estudio investiga la relación entre la variedad relacionada y no relacionada y las trampas de desarrollo regional en 26 regiones NUTS 2 de Turquía desde 2014 a 2021. Se proponen dos medidas únicas, la DT1 y la DT2, para estas trampas basadas en las desviaciones de las naciones de la UE y de los mercados emergentes. Los hallazgos sugieren una correlación negativa notable entre la variedad relacionada y la DT1, lo que implica que aumentar la variedad relacionada podría mitigar el riesgo de caer en trampas de desarrollo. Además, la DT1 pareció ser más fiable que la DT2 a la hora de representar con precisión el riesgo de trampas de desarrollo regional, sobre todo en países que experimentan grandes desviaciones de crecimiento, como Turquía. 本稿では、2014~2021年までのトルコ全土の26のNUTS 2地域における関連業種多様性(related variety)及び非関連業種多様性(unrelated variety)と地域開発の罠の関連性を検討する。EU脱退や新興市場国に基づいたDT1とDT2という、これらの罠に対する2つのユニークな対策を提案する。知見から、関連業種多様性とDT1との間には顕著な負の相関関係があることが示唆され、関連業種多様性を増やすことで開発の罠に陥るリスクを軽減できる可能性があることが示唆される。さらに、特にトルコのように高い成長率を経験している国では、地域開発の罠のリスクが正確に現れるため、DT1はDT2よりも信頼性が高いと考えられる。
