[Consumption of Processed Seasonings in Europe: Evidence from EFSA Food Data]

Abstract

The consumption of processed foods has been increasing, and within this broad category, a lesser-studied group, seasonings, has also seen a rise. The globalization, international marketing, migration, and quest for flavor have significantly increased the consumption of seasonings, which, while originally based on herbs and spices, are now often composed of highly processed ingredients. Excessive consumption of these processed seasonings can be detrimental to health. Consequently, this study analyzes the current landscape of processed seasoning consumption in Europe, utilizing a sample of 14 countries and the comprehensive database of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The analysis focuses on the first five levels of FoodEx2, examining consumption patterns and historical data. The findings confirm an increase in the consumption of this category across various European countries.
