Wollen wir überhaupt wissen, wie der Status quo im Tierschutz ist?

Abstract

In den Sozialwissenschaften gibt es ein zunehmendes Interesse an der Thematik der Informationsvermeidung (engl. Information Avoidance, nachfolgend IA) – der aktiven Entscheidung, Informationen nicht zu erhalten bzw. aufzunehmen. Die Verarbeitung von Informationen zum Tierschutz in der deutschen Nutztierhaltung wurde bisher jedoch nicht systematisch untersucht. Wir schließen diese Lücke, indem wir eine webbasierte Umfrage in Deutschland durchführen und uns dabei auf das Ablehnen von Verantwortung (für z.B. eigenes Verhalten) als möglichen Prädiktor für IA konzentrieren. Wie in der Psychologie vorgeschlagen, messen wir IA mit Hilfe mehrerer Items, um den Messfehler zu reduzieren. In unserer Studie waren sowohl das „Verantwortungsgefühl für den Tierschutz“ als auch das „Bewusstsein für Tierschutzfragen“ negativ mit IA korreliert. Das steht im Widerspruch zu früheren Studien (z.B. im Bereich Medizin oder Lebensmittelkonsum), in denen Menschen Informationen vermeiden, von denen sie erwarten, dass sie negative Emotionen auslösen. Unsere Ergebnisse tragen zu einem besseren Verständnis möglicher Marktversagen bei (z. B. asymmetrische Informationen, Moral Hazard) und deuten darauf hin, dass die Bereitstellung von mehr Informationen für die Menschen das Potenzial haben könnte, die gesetzlichen Tierschutzstandards weiter zu erhöhen.
