A Escolaridade dos Pais, os Retornos à Educação no Mercado de Trabalho e a Desigualdade de Rendimentos

Abstract

Este artigo analisa o impacto da educação dos pais sobre os retornos à escolaridade dos trabalhadores e as consequências desse efeito para a desigualdade de rendimentos no Brasil. Utilizando dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD) de 1996, os resultados mostram que cada ano a mais de estudo está associado a um aumento de 4,8% no diferencial de rendimentos entre trabalhadores cujos pais alcançaram pelo menos 8 anos de estudo em relação ao grupo de indivíduos cujos pais não completaram 4 anos de estudo. Os resultados também sugerem que mesmo mantendo a elevada desigualdade educacional constante, a desigualdade seria reduzida e a média dos rendimentos do trabalho aumentada substancialmente se trabalhadores com pais pouco escolarizados tivessem o mesmo retorno à escolaridade que os trabalhadores cujos pais alcançaram níveis mais altos de educação. This paper investigates the impact of parental education on the earnings returns to schooling and the consequences of this effect for income inequality in Brazil. The empirical analysis uses data from the 1996 Brazilian Household Survey (PNAD). According to the estimated results, each additional year of schooling is associated with an increase of 4.8% in the earnings differential between workers whose parents had at least 8 years of education and those workers whose parents did not complete 4 years of schooling. The results also indicate that earnings inequality would be reduced and the average labor earnings would be increased a lot if workers with low educated parents have the same return to schooling that those workers whose parents have achieved higher levels of education.
