O Impacto da Renda Domiciliar sobre a Saúde Infantil no Brasil

Abstract

Diversos estudos indicam que a renda domiciliar parece um importante determinante da saúde infantil. Este trabalho tem como objetivo documentar a relação entre renda e saúde das crianças no Brasil, usando três diferentes bases de dados e várias medidas de saúde. Na análise empírica, são utilizadas informações da Pesquisa de Orçamentos Familiares (POF) de 2002/2003, do suplemento de saúde da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (Pnad) de 2003 e da Pesquisa Nacional de Demografia e Saúde (PNDS) de 2006. Os resultados mostram que crianças mais pobres tendem a ter condições de saúde significativamente piores do que crianças mais ricas, mesmo controlando para uma série de características individuais e dos seus pais. Além disso, são apresentadas evidências de que crianças mais ricas normalmente se recuperam melhor de choques negativos de saúde. Como crianças menos saudáveis podem ter sua capacidade produtiva reduzida no futuro, os resultados apresentados neste artigo sugerem que as condições de saúde infantil no Brasil podem se constituir em um importante mecanismo de transmissão intergeracional de desigualdade nas condições socioeconômicas. There are several studies showing that household income seems to be an important determinant of children’s health. The objective of this paper is to document the relationship between income and children’s health in Brazil using three data sources and many health indicators. The empirical analysis is conducted with information from the 2002/2003 POF (Consumer Expenditure Survey), the 2003 Pnad (Brazilian National Household Survey) and the 2006 PNDS (Demographic and Health Survey). According to the results, children who live in poorer households are likely to have worse health status than richer children even controlling for many individual and parents’ characteristics. In addition, there is evidence that richer children recover better from negative health shocks than poorer ones. Because children in poor health could have their productivity capacity reduced in the future, the evidence presented in this paper indicates that children’s health status in Brazil could be an important mechanism of intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic inequality.
