Edith Penrose et la croissance des entreprises

Abstract

S'il est courant aujourd'hui de parler de compétences, de connaissances, d'imagination, de flexibilité ou encore de ressources pour comprendre la croissance des " firmes-réseaux " ou des entreprises innovantes, cela le fut beaucoup moins au milieu du XXe siècle lorsque dominait le modèle des grandes firmes managériales et les interrogations sur leur " taille optimale ". Toute l'originalité des travaux d'Edith Penrose tient dans la mobilisation avant-gardiste de ces concepts pour construire une théorie dynamique de la firme et de sa croissance qui dépasse les frontières disciplinaires entre l'économie et la gestion. Comme le montre cet ouvrage, la filiation entre les travaux de Penrose et les débats actuels dans le cadre de la Resource-Based View transparaît tant dans la distinction entre " taille " et " croissance " de la firme, que dans le rôle de la connaissance dans cette croissance aujourd'hui au cœur du champ du management stratégique. Cet ouvrage contient une traduction inédite d'un article de Penrose, peu connu, publié en 1955 dans l'American Economic Review : " Limits to the Growth and Size of Firms ".
