Abstract

Un double objectif a présidé à l'élaboration d'un questionnaire " pilote " concernant les attitudes des Français face à l'incertain et à l'avenir. On tentera d'une part, de dresser le profil des individus selon leur attitude à l'égard du risque et leur façon d'appréhender le futur. D'autre part et surtout, il s'agira de vérifier si les paramètres de préférence mesurés ont des effets propres sur l'accumulation patrimoniale et les demandes d'actifs conformes aux prédictions des modèles d'épargne, et de déterminer si l'hétérogénéité individuelle des préférences constitue, à côté des indicateurs habituels, un facteur explicatif important des inégalités de fortune. Comme le millier d'individus volontaires interrogés a été tiré de l'échantillon de l'enquête Patrimoine 1998 effectuée par l'Insee, on dispose en effet, pour chaque enquêté, d'informations détaillées sur ses caractéristiques sociodémographiques et patrimoniales. Ce questionnaire comprend plus de 80 questions qui couvrent un large éventail des domaines de l'existence : consommation, loisirs, santé, placements, travail, retraite, famille, etc. Dans chaque domaine interviennent des questions de différente nature : comportements, opinions ou intentions, réactions à des loteries ou à des scénarios fictifs. Chaque question a été affectée à une préférence au moins : attitudes face au risque, préférence pour le présent, impatience à court terme, altruisme - familial ou non - à plus long terme. L'objectif est d'obtenir un " score " individuel pour chaque préférence, moyenne supposée représentative de l'ensemble des réponses apportées par l'enquêté aux questions pertinentes. Ces mesures sont purement qualitatives et ordinales : en d'autres termes, il s'agit de classer, au sein de la population, les individus selon leur attitude vis-à-vis du risque - plutôt que de donner une mesure cardinale de leur aversion au risque - et selon la priorité qu'ils accordent au présent à différentes échéances.
