Abstract

In 1943, Maurice Allais published his Traité d'économie pure. The contribution of this work in the history of the theory of general equilibrium models is fundamental for three reasons. Allais conceives an intertemporal general equilibrium model. Walras had discussed the stability of equilibrium in his famous but rather clumsy theory of tâtonnements. Allais proposes the first rigorous demonstration of the stability of equilibrium. To study the properties of a competitive equilibrium, Edgeworth and Pareto had introduced the notion of optimum. Allais establishes the two fundamental theorems of welfare economics.
