Abstract

This paper studies the recent evolution of international trade logistic costs. Domestic logistic costs as a whole have declined as a share of U.S. GDP since the 80s : they now stand at slightly less than 10 % — but transport costs have not. The paper uses two families of sources to measure international transport costs. International trade statistics provide information about the transport cost of imports in a limited number of countries (including the U.S.) from the 70s. The choice of a deflator determines the interpretation of price index series. Available information point to a very small decline — if any — of transport costs relative to the value of exchanged goods since the 50s, except in land and air transport. This is in part because of changes both in the composition of trade and the quality of transport services.
