Abstract

The Maastricht Treaty founded the European Union. It is often presented as a successful example of economic integration within the framework of a market economy. It has been able to develop and expand, to offer a relatively efficient customs union and a process of economic integration that implies solidarity among its members. It has several common economic policies, notably concerning industry, trade, agriculture, the regions and the environment. It is also engaged in a single currency process, albeit with some reluctance. However, behind this rapid analysis of the integration process, many efforts still need to be made by its members, particularly in the areas of security, social policies and solidarity between states.
