Abstract

After the collapse of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact, NATO seems to have lost much of its strategic relevance. Europe questioned the future of this heavily US-dominated military alliance. However, the new members' fear of Russia was probably decisive for its present and future. Ultimately, the United States, through the Alliance, indirectly controls a significant portion of European military spending, and Europeans benefit from both increased security coverage and a reduced burden on their own security. However, Washington may consider that its spending on the protection of Europe is excessive and Europe may regret this vassalization over time.
