Abstract

The impact of military expenditure on the national economy is still a matter of debate among economists between those who consider it to be a burden, those who highlight military Keynesianism and those who point out that a country's security is an essential element for its economic development, particularly in order to escape the effects of domination and predation systems. Econometrics has recently been invited into this debate, but it suffers from the difficulty of defining military expenditure and verifying its content. In addition, there is the question of the economic objectives of France's military policy, which is designed to boost the economy, support an armaments industry or develop research and development. In fact, military expenditure is not generally subject to a profitability calculation, since national sovereignty is imposed on all economic considerations.
