Abstract

Originally, war was seen as a natural way of acquiring wealth or power. War was therefore not in itself an ethical fault. Today, violence and armed conflict are contested by the international community, except when law and justice are violated. The right to war sets the conditions for its exercise. For economists, war is an indispensable element in the control of social and international disagreements, sometimes provoked by the violence of global industrial competition. Military operations are justified to defend a country's vital interests, to develop peacekeeping operations or to defend democratic values and human rights. For Islam, war is detestable except to combat injustice, protect religious freedom and repel aggression. For the Church, self-defense and "just war" can justify war. Nevertheless, international actors are normally subject to international ethical rules, which are not always respected.
