Abstract

Military spending, like armed conflict, is not a field of study prized by economists, as if it did not meet an economic need or fulfil any security utility for the operation of production or trade activities. However, some macroeconomic studies highlight their impact on investment, GDP growth, employment, inflation, the balance of public spending, the balance of payments or the attractiveness of national economies. At the microeconomic level, the armaments industries and firms modify the conditions of development of the national industrial structures; they have a strong influence on research and development, technology and national infrastructures. Finally, as part of the budget analysis, military spending contributes to investment choices and public current spending, with spillover and crowding-out effects.
