Las Redes de Nueva Generación en España. Situación actual y retos para el futuro

Abstract

Las Redes de Nueva Generación (Next Generation Networks, NGNs) basadas en fibra óptica están revolucionando el sector de las telecomunicaciones. Reemplazar el cobre por fibra permitirá mejorar drásticamente las prestaciones de las redes actuales, alcanzando velocidades de acceso de más de 100 Mbps e incrementando el número y la calidad de los servicios que se prestan. Este artículo ofrece una introducción técnica a las NGNs, se hace un análisis económico de la industria, se discuten las implicaciones económicas de las NGNs, el papel que el sector público puede tener en el despliegue de las mismas, y realiza un repaso de la situación en España, poniéndola en contexto con otras experiencias internacionales. El artículo muestra que el despliegue de las NGNs en España es muy limitado con respecto a Europa. Esta situación es preocupante, no sólo porque no se está aprovechando el importante impacto económico de las NGNs, sino porque además la renovación de las redes sería una oportunidad para aumentar la competencia dentro del sector.
