Abstract

La divergencia entre lo que la medicina puede lograr y lo que las sociedades y los gobiernos están en capacidad de financiar o proveer, hace cada vez más relevante la evaluación económica como una herramienta que permite que ciertos juicios implícitos se vuelvan explícitos y con esto los encargados de tomar las decisiones, además de anticipar y valorar las posibles consecuencias de los diferentes cursos de acción, pueden reunir criterios de racionalidad que ofrezcan a la sociedad una mayor transparencia respecto al uso de los recursos y una mejor percepción del proceso político y de las acciones adelantadas. En este artículo se ilustran las etapas fundamentales de una evaluación económica en salud y se discuten las cuestiones metodológicas más importantes. **** The gap between what medicine can do and what it is economically feasible to do makes more relevant the economic evaluation of health care programmes as a tool that makes explicit what otherwise would be implicit and informs decision makers about the health impact and resource use of different health programmes, which may offer society a better understanding of political process and resource allocation. This article shows the steps in an economic evaluation in health. Also, some methodological issues are discussed.
