Polarización económica y emergencia de confilctos violentos internos un estudio empírico

Abstract

En este escrito se analiza empíricamente el efecto de la polarización económica en la emergencia de los conflictos violentos internos. Utilizando datos recientes de distribución del ingreso de 138 países para el período 1970-2000 (de Salai-Martín [2006]) y construyendo con ellos índices de polarización económica para cada país y período (según Esteban y Ray [1994] y Esteban, Gradín y Ray [1999]) se muestra que dicha polzarización influye de manera no monotónica en la probabilidad de emergencia de tales conflictos. Este resultado confirma la tesis de que situaciones altamente polarizadas pueden ser bastante pacíficas, pues los costos de un eventual conflicto son demasiado altos, ocurriendo lo mismo para situaciones de baja polarización debido al poco pago que implicaría tal conflicto (Esteban y Ray [2006a]).
