Instrumentos financieros y bienestar de los hogares rurales colombianos ante choques climáticos

Abstract

El cambio climático ha aumentado la vulnerabilidad de los hogares rurales ante su dependencia a las actividades agropecuarias. Este artículo estudia el efecto de los choques de sequía en los hogares y analiza si la tenencia de servicios financieros formales como el crédito, ahorro y seguro se relaciona con menores efectos de estos choques. Los datos utilizados provienen de la Encuesta Longitudinal Colombiana de la Universidad de los Andes (ELCA), que sigue a 3.340 hogares rurales en los años 2010, 2013 y 2016, así como los datos de precipitaciones para más de 1.200 estaciones meteorológicas del Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (IDEAM). Los resultados sugieren que los choques exógenos de sequía repercuten negativamente sobre la proporción de menores escolarizados en hasta 1% y el consumo de alimentos y no alimentos en 1,7% y 3,8%, respectivamente, y se encuentra además que los servicios financieros, aumentan el bienestar de los hogares y suavizan los efectos negativos de las sequías sobre el gasto de alimentos y otros bienes y servicios.
