Abstract

The author reports and comments on his personal experience and conclusions of managing a business in Uganda. No Human Resources (HR) manual drawn up by a global headquarter will be applicable in a country like Uganda with its special conditions affecting a company’s staff. The country manager has to come up with new ways that account for the local circumstances. Forming functioning teams that consist of international and Ugandan staff is challenging for various reasons described in this chapter. However, Uganda offers a large pool of young and motivated people and although managing a business in Uganda is daunting at the best of times, it provides much room for creative problem solving for managers. Approached with the right managerial attitude, Uganda offers one of the most rewarding business environments for any manager.
