Abstract

Commerce and trade of any economy is measured by the balance between its imports and exports. For a landlocked country in Africa, the choice of trade routes to seaports has a huge bearing on the cost of landing and the reliability of imports and, as such, on the competitiveness of its exports on the international market. Achieving the desired balance of trade will largely depend on the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain approaches which the businesses adopt. Understanding the historical challenges and learning from the experience of other successful entities will greatly help in avoiding costly trials. The author’s vast experience during the time period 2003 and 2022 when the organizations he managed supplied key petroleum and gas products to the mining sector in landlocked Zambia is presented in this chapter. They are practical experiences which, when adopted to company specifics, will provide a solid platform for supply chain success into an African landlocked economy.
