Abstract

Each year, July 11 is a special day for demographers: Since 1989, this day has been known as World Population Day. After the world’s population passed the five billion mark on July 11, 1987, the United Nations wanted to send a message to the world and draw public attention to the problems associated with population growth. The twentieth century has seen the largest population increase in the history of mankind. While the world’s population was around 1.5 billion at the turn of the last century, it had already reached 2.5 billion by 1950 and will have grown to 7.9 billion by the end of 2021. Since the 1950s alone, the world’s population has more than tripled. The three main demographic factors—birth rate, life expectancy, and immigration—are discussed here, as are a number of other related trends that impact society.
