The Production of Gender Disparities over the Life Course and Their Effects in Old Age — Results from the West German Life History Study

Abstract

Compared to men, women are more likely to reach retirement age, they are more likely to spend a considerable time in retirement, and they are more likely to spend a considerable length of their life alone. Moreover, women are likely to have considerably less money than men — men are economically independent, women are dependent. Older women experience, in their daily lives, how past events shape present outcomes.
