Wirtschaftliche Effekte von Universitäten. Aktualisierung 2022

Abstract

Universitäten sind zentrale Institutionen in wissensbasierten Gesellschaften. Ihre Aktivitäten ziehen vielfältige wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Effekte nach sich. Die vorliegende Studie aktualisiert universitäre Effekte für Innovation, Arbeitsmarkt und Wirtschaft auf Basis der vorangegangenen WIFO-Studie aus dem Jahr 2017. Schon die Steuereinnahmen, die sich aus dem Betrieb der Universitäten ergeben – etwa durch Personalausgaben – sind kurz- bis mittelfristig höher als die Bundesmittel für Universitäten. Die Betriebseffekte der Universitäten sind jedoch als Spitze eines Eisbergs zu betrachten: Die wirklich wesentlichen Effekte wie die langfristigen Produktivitätseffekte über Wissensproduktion und -vermittlung entstehen zusätzlich zu den Betriebseffekten, lassen also den Ertrag öffentlicher Mittel noch viel deutlicher in den positiven Bereich ansteigen.
