State of the field: A comparative analysis of international development studies majors in Canada, the United Kingdom and United States

Abstract

Through a critical analysis of undergraduate Development Studies (DS) majors, this study examines the ways that DS departments construct the discipline and contribute to the production of knowledge in the field. By comparing curricular requirements of DS majors at 56 universities, this paper illuminates priorities of DS as identified through teaching. We find that most DS majors have an interdisciplinary focus, require courses in economics and research methods and offer experiential learning opportunities. Limited attention, however, is given to regional or thematic specialisations and second language learning pointing to further work needed towards decolonizing DS curricula.
