Drivers of adoption and impacts of an eco-friendly agricultural technology in Bangladesh

Abstract

The excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides creates serious soil health hazards. Vermicompost, a cleaner production technology, is useful for soil fertility and maintaining an ecological balance. This study identified the factors driving the adoption of vermicompost and its impact in Bangladesh by conducting double-hurdle regression, propensity-score matching, and inverse probability weighted regression. Approximately 28.5% of the farmers that participated in this study adopted vermicompost. The farmer participants with training were 28% more likely to adopt vermicompost than the non-trained farmer participants. The effects of vermicompost adoption on productivity and pesticide applications were 29% and − 39%, respectively. Extension facilities need to be improved to increase the level of adoption. Modifications to the extension approach could provide farmers’ family members with opportunities to increase their knowledge and skills. Incentives for entrepreneurs should be offered to increase the production and availability of vermicompost at the farm level.
