Abstract

The current paper reveals the performability and maintenance decisions for the Coal Ash Handling System (CAHS) of a subcritical Thermal Power Plant (TPP). This system comprises of five subsystems i.e. Furnace, Electro Static Precipitator (ESP), Vessel, Compressor Transportation Line (CTL) and Ash Silo. Transition diagram was formulated on the basis of probabilistic approach for various subsystems. Performability model was developed through the summation of state probabilities by using the normalizing condition. Performability matrices were obtained by the numerous actions of repair and failure rates for all five subsystems. The performance for all five subsystems was estimated in the form of availability given in performability matrices. The maintenance decisions of various subsystems for CAHS are specified with the help of repair rate. It is clearly predicited from this study that ESP is most critical and ash silo is a least critical subsystem. ESP will be held on uppermost position and ash silo on lowermost position, whenever compelling the maintenance priority. The implementation of both performability and maintenance decisions by the administration of a subcritical TPP will lead to improve the system performability and reduce the total maintenance cost.
