Abstract

Zusammenfassung In diesem Aufsatz wird der Zusammenhang zwischen Bevölkerungsdichte, Stadtstruktur und Umweltverschmutzung untersucht. Der Beitrag präsentiert stadtökonomische Modelle, in denen die Haupttreiber der städtischen Verschmutzung analysiert werden. Zudem wird empirische Evidenz zu den betrachteten Zusammenhängen präsentiert sowie wirtschaftspolitische Implikationen diskutiert. Kurz gesagt: größere und dichter besiedelte Städte produzieren mehr Luftverschmutzung und $$\text{CO}_{2}$$CO2, aber vermutlich weniger $$\text{CO}_{2}$$CO2 pro Kopf. Ohne Regulierung werden Städte zu wenig dicht bebaut, und große Städte könnten im Vergleich zum Wohlfahrtsoptimum zu klein sein.
