Environmental regulation and labor market: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract

Environmental regulation’s impact on the labor market is a very important topic. However, there is a lack of systematic literature review detailing current research in this field. This paper attempts to make up for this gap by first establishing the theoretical model of the impact of environmental regulation on the labor market, then examines and discusses the impact mechanisms in combination with the existing literature. Last, this paper establishes a visual evaluation of the current literature in this field through bibliometric analysis. The results are as follows: (1) Econometric methods have become the mainstream in this field. (2) Environmental regulations mainly affect the labor market through the substitution effect and the output effect, which may act alone or in combination. Due to the relatively imperfect environmental policy-making and the labor market in developing countries, the negative impact of substitution effect and output effect is more profound. (3) The USA is an important contributor in this field, with the largest number of publications, followed by China. However, the average citation number of publications in China is 0.4 to that of US studies, indicating that the quality and influence of China’s publications can be improved. (4) Among the academic cooperation in this field, Chinese scholars and American scholars have the closest cooperation. Scholars from developing countries, such as South America and Africa, rarely participate in international cooperation, with China being an exception. (5) The impact of environmental regulation on workers’ wages and employment is the most popular topic in this field. (6) China and other developing countries will become research hot spots in the near future. This paper provides a summary of research methods in different areas of this field and identifies directions for future research.
